If John Lott is right that each death penalty for murder saves 15-18 lives, is the death penalty good policy?

I do not agree at all. Innocent people are innocent people and surely does does deserve death. Not even a proven murderer. It is better life sentence. What would one get with vengenace death. We should practice mercy if we want to have mercy.
